Hormone treatment in a heatwave? We’ve got you

If you’re having cancer treatment, this might involve some kind of hormone therapy. A really common side effect of hormone treatment is hot flushes, particularly for men on LHRH agonists or anti-androgens.

Hot flushes can vary from a few seconds of feeling overheated to hours of sweating. You may feel very hot in your face, neck, chest or back, and they may come on without any warning. Hot flushes are certainly no fun in this weather!

When temperatures get really warm, try to stay hydrated, wear loose clothing and if possible avoid being out and about during the hottest peak of the day. Below, there’s a quick recipe for a cooling facial mist which is also a really effective way to cool down quickly.

Cucumber is used in this recipe as it has a natural cooling effect on the skin. You don’t have to use the essential oils if you don’t have them or don’t want to, but peppermint will help boost the cooling effect whilst lavender can be calming if your symptoms are making you feel flustered.

1 – Fill a spray or mister bottle with cool distilled or purified water

2 – Add finely diced cucumber

3 – Add a few drops of lavender and peppermint oil (optional)

4 – Keep your bottle cool where possible, and mist your face when necessary

If you or someone you know is affected by prostate, testicular or penile cancer, our free patient and family support groups across Devon and Cornwall offer a space to connect with others who understand what you’re going through.
