Support Group Drakes Island Visit.

The rain made way for clear skies

The rain made way for clear skies as the Plymouth PC Support Group boarded the Edgcumbe Belle from the Barbican and made the short journey over to Drakes Island.  The wind was fresh and made for sea spray, waves and a bumpy ride over.

The tour started with a quick history of the island and its many inhabitants. We then made our way up to the highest point with views over the sound and Mount Edgcumbe noting the cormorants who were perched high in one of the many trees on the back of the Island.

The group then walked up to the armaments before we headed underground.  Torches on and Morgan led us down the labyrinth of tunnels.  Stories of friendly and not so friendly ghosts told along the way.

Glimpses of sunlight and around to the impressive gun placements that stretch along one side of the island.  These we were told will become luxury hotel rooms – what a great view guests will wake up to.

The tour finished with another delve through the tunnels which brought us back close to the buildings that once housed the officers who served there in the 1800’s.

We were able to fund this amazing trip thanks to the people that play The People’s Postcode Lottery,
